In a world that often values conformity, it's easy to lose connection to your unique essence – your authentic self. So many of us struggle with being truly genuine and authentic. If you like most, you often experience imposter syndrome, thinking you don’t deserve to have a certain role at work, and maybe you routinely hide your true thoughts and feelings to fit in. So, if your authentic self isn’t always showing up, who is? It’s a little thing called, your persona.
Starting in infancy and childhood, you used your experiences to adjust your thoughts and behaviors and maybe even your values and aspirations, so others would see you as worthwhile and take care of you. After all, humans, like other mammals, often must live in groups for the support and assistance that enable them to stay alive. And as you make these adjustments, you cover over the authentic you – the person you were when you were born.
This means that for at least some of your life – usually middle adulthood and beyond, you have set yourself up for a self-remodeling project – to rediscover the real, genuine “you” that lies at the heart of who you are authentically.
Your persona has profound power in your life, learning to understand and embrace it allows you to eventually let go of at least some aspects of it to lead to a more fulfilling and authentic life.
Persona Defined
First, the “persona” is, according to the dictionary, the “role that one assumes or displays in public or society; one's public image or personality, as distinguished from the inner self.” Different but related, your “personality” includes the behaviors and traits that make up your persona.
Your persona is the face you present to the world; it's the culmination of multiple adaptations you have made since infancy and childhood to fit into a world where you wouldn’t have survived had you not made some adjustments to please others. It is the way you see yourself based on the story you tell about yourself, and that story comes from your experiences in life. Those experiences led to the adaptations you made to stay "acceptable” and “loveable” enough to fit in, so others would protect and care for you.
Like the tip of an iceberg, your persona sits above the water, making it the part of you that is visible to others. In a way, it’s also the part of you that you have a sense of control over. It’s the part that allows you to interact with the vagaries of daily living. Each triumph, failure, and challenge contributes to the façade you create to meet what you think are the expectations from others. Also like an iceberg, there is a large part of you that is hidden below the water and includes the parts of you you suppress and repress, those that you're conscious of and those that are unconscious.
While you may feel pressure to hide parts of yourself to conform for your family and society at large, your true power lies in your authenticity. It’s by exploring what makes you “you” that you can start to question how and when you started adding layers of your persona to cover over the authentic “you” underneath the mask of your persona. Yet, to become proudly, unapologetically you, it takes courage and introspection to start to peel back the persona you worked so diligently to create.
Understanding the Layers and Labels
Your persona is multi-faceted, and layered. It will take a deep dive into self-reflection to understand these layers that include your beliefs, passions, strengths, and even vulnerabilities. The labels you use to describe yourself can actually be restricting you, confining you to predefined boxes. Labels like “headstrong”, “quiet”, “tricky”, etc. often came from family and others, but limited you because they come from the incomplete and imperfect perspectives of others. By reflecting on and really exploring the layers and labels that make up your persona, you can break free from those that limit you and truly were imposed on you from the outside. You are not a one-dimensional individual; you have countless qualities that you can access.
Harnessing the Powers of Courage, Confidence, Empathy, and Connection
Deciding to truly explore your persona and your authentic self hidden underneath requires courage, confidence, and a belief in yourself. In this way, the process of looking at your persona can bring out the confidence to face feeling vulnerable and a little lost along the way.
It’s almost as if the development of a persona is a necessary blindfold. That is, by developing the persona, you repressed many wonderful qualities, not seeing and accessing them even though they have always been at your disposal. So, in a way, this rediscovery process requires that you access the qualities of courage and confidence to recover or uncover your genuine self. And through this quest to recover more authenticity, in a weird way, your persona connects you with others on a deeper level.
Understanding your own ordeal allows you to empathize with similar struggles of those around you. In the end, when you can share more of your authentic self, you foster genuine connections that enrich your life.
The Continuous Evolution
The balance between your persona and genuine self is not linear or one-directional. It twists, turns, and spirals around again throughout your life. It evolves daily. In this way, growth IS change. So, embrace change as a normal part of living because every experience, whether pleasant or challenging, contributes to refining the balance between expressing your persona and your authentic self.
To navigate change and growth, it will take a relationship with yourself based on love and compassion. Celebrate your victories, forgive your shortcomings, and recognize that your persona wasn’t created in a day and won’t be explored and let go of in a day either. You are a lifelong work in progress. Embracing self-love is the cornerstone of unleashing the full power of exploring your persona to get to greater authenticity.
Conclusion
The true power of your persona lies in the process of understanding it and letting go of it to become authentically and unapologetically yourself. Your life-long trip of self-discovery is ongoing. With each step, you unlock new facets of your unique identity. So, embrace the power within your persona, because understanding how it was created is the key to uncovering a life filled with authenticity, connection, and fulfillment.
